J Paul January 4, 2009 James Crain (La) This little camera is great for the price.Good quality vidio even in lower light . Long battery life; about three hours and with a 4gig card you can get six hours of vidio . I am very pleased with this purchase.
okay for some uses December 31, 2008 Jon Norris (Oregon, USA) This camcorder has many interesting features, shoots pretty good video for its price range, and a battery with reasonable shooting time. It is designed primarily for use with a computer, and has limited connections available. Included are cables to get USB and composite video out. No Firewire, RGB, or S-video connections are available. This camcorder is designed specifically for the mobile, computer-based video user, and has "You Tube friendly" tags in several places. It has no onboard memory, and requires an SD card, which is NOT included, so remember to get some when you buy this. It records only in MPEG4, using the h.264 codec. This is an outstanding codec, but not as well supported yet as MPEG 1 and 2. The files would not play directly on my Philips DVD player's USB port, as some mp4 files will. The highest video quality setting is on par with very good VHS tape. The lens cover control is manual, and the camera display reminds you to open it when you power it on. Just remember to close it when finished shooting if you want to protect the lens. There is no threading for external filters or accessories. The autofocus is easily fooled by motion, so use manual focus for moving subjects. It has many features I have not yet tried, but which seem useful and fun. The memory card and battery install on the bottom, which means you cannot change them while the camera is on a tripod. It shares the same bullet/beer can shape that Samsung is using for camcorders lately. I have the same complaints about this model's ergonomics that I voiced about the HD model, which is slightly larger: The shape and size are quite handy and easy to hold in some ways, but I find the mechanics of shooting quite uncomfortable. Having to hold a cylinder parallel to the ground out away from the body is not ergonomically sound by any measure. The handhold does rotate down to the back, but that doesn't help much. It feels awkward to use, period. A small tripod used as a pistol grip would be helpful, as would a beltpod or similar device. It works well on a small tripod. Again, the included Quickstart guide was very limited and the main manual is CD based, a royal nuisance, especially if one wants to carry it out in the field. The included Windows software would not install on my Windows ME machine, so I assume that it is for XP and Vista (nothing in the docs about this), as is most Windows software today. No Linux software is included. This camcorder has a very limited range of uses. For Windows based/online use, it is a good low-end camera. It is not very useful for anything more.
Samsung camera - beware of the Software included!!! December 29, 2008 M. J. Busse (usa) The video camer Samsung SC-MX20 Flash Memory Camcorder is easy to use and seems to be working fine --however --BEWARE -the Cyberlink Media software that comes with the camcorder it is NOT working properly - we have to buy additional video editing software which will cost around $69.99 -- and there is no way to contact the software people. If you read reviews about the software - they are HORRIBLE. So google the sofware before you buy this camcorder. I wish Amazon had checked this out before - we are a bit disappointed and would NOT recommend buying this camcorder.
For the price, excellent December 22, 2008 Peter Reeve (Thousand Oaks, CA USA) Aimed squarely at YouTubers, the MX20 is a significant upgrade to the MX10 and is worthy of consideration. It has the functionality of a serious camcorder, combined with the ease and convenience of a flash-recording device. No, the picture quality is not as good as camcorders many times the price, nor can one expect it to be. I like the way you can rotate both the handle and the LCD screen through 180 degrees. This makes it very flexible - for example, you can film yourself, seeing the picture at the same time. I love flash memory cards. Once you start to accumulate cards of various capacities, plus a USB hub, USB cables, card readers, etc, then it becomes so much easier to store all kinds of files, and to transfer them between camcorders, GPS systems, your PC and whatever. Having said all that, it's a little annoying that they don't actually include the card with this camcorder. Most gadgets at least include a small-capacity card to start you off. If you are giving the SC-MX20 as a gift, it would be nice to include a memory card with it. The whole thing has a good-quality, easy-to-handle feel about it, and is great for the price. [PeterReeve]
A Good Simple Camera - Some Disappointments December 18, 2008 rareoopdvds (San Diego, CA United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Overall I liked the camera. The design is simple, feels good in the hand. It uses an SD card to handle the storing of video that you record. Easy playback on the video screen. There is no view-finder, which is, for obvious reasons, becoming unnecessary. As mentioned by other posters, the widescreen and anamorphic representations pose a problem when playing back the video on YouTube or your own computer. I noticed this as the video was stretched. So you have to resort to recording as a full frame despite the default setting on widescreen. This Samsung SC-MX20, which proudly displys the YouTube logo on the side suggests it is primed for YouTube friendly camera. By and large it is. You plug the USB cord in and remove the files to your hard drive. The program that comes with this package allows easy access to upload to YouTube. The problem I had with the program was that it kept crashing, and it was super slow in accessing photos and videos. Enough to not even want to bother with the program. Also, its rare that you will edit "in-in-the-can" so you wont upload to YouTube straight from the source. The program does not do any editing, so it becomes, ultimately, a worthless program. Other issues, pointed out by users, was the lens needs to be manually opened and closed. It is a good lens and takes good shots, and also displays the kind of lens you are using a Schneider Lens, so you might expect some automatic open/close protection. I noticed (and it could just be my computer, or the settings of the recording), but, the playback was inconsistent, frames are sometimes dropped, audio drops, that make for an ugly playback. The files I dont think were too big to make my computer have poor playback, so I think it was the recording. The features on the camera, the zoom controls and recording are all in easy access places. You can charge the camera directly by plugging in, which is nice you dont have to take the battery out. Its overall a responsive camera that feels good. It just needs a few tweaks to make it a really good camera. Unfortunately, these seemingly small things are enough to warrant it 3 stars and not 4. If it gets upgraded, this could be a really good camera for more uses than small webisodes.
