5 out of 5 stars excellent for customization and control   January 9, 2009
D. Gorlova
Well, I'm no camera expert, but you can get my opinion as an amateur photographer, feeling too limited by the point-and-shoot and looking for an equipment upgrade.

And what an upgrade this is! I am in love with this Nikon, for the most part it does everything I need quite well. Colors are excellent, vibration reduction is great, and it is low-noise. I was fairly unfamiliar with all the functions, but a read through the manual made everything very intuitive, and I am surprised how fast I caught on. So I also enjoyed to find that it was easy to learn.

One thing I feel inadequate are the matrix metering; even when in use with the D-Lighting function (supposed to give you more shadow detail without overexposing highlights) on high, many times the photos come out higher contrast than desired. From what I've noticed, though, this is fixable with minimal quality damage in a photo editing program (by changing levels/reducing contrast).

One of my favorite aspects is the ability to do some photo editing on-camera:
- You can do a quick re-touch, which automatically adjusts levels for better contrast and color balance.
- apply filter effects: warm filter, skylight (I still don't know what that is), blue filter, red filter, green filter, even cross-screen (more customizable than the actual filter, but not as organic and worse in quality than actual filter, so it has its pros and cons against the actual).
- adjust color levels on a four-dimensional color grid.
- adjust D-Lighting. This is a really really awesome feature to have, definitely a favorite!
- fish-eye effect, as well as a sort of reverse fish-eye to correct for distortion
- resize
- tilt
- RAW processing
- crop
- and probably more that i am forgetting
- monochromatic in BnW, Cyanotype, and Sepia. The latter of the two being adjustable in saturation. You can also customize it further in shooting mode - you can pick almost any color and saturation!

I especially enjoy the absolute customization you have over the white balance. You can select a preset, make your own presets in several ways, or adjust color temperature easily before every shot. Actually you can customize almost anything on this camera, and I love having my control. Most settings are really easy to change with the external buttons, without going into the menu.

Live View is also a huge plus, but less helpful than I imagined. Apparently using Live View for extended periods of time damages the camera's sensor, and the camera has a very difficult time focusing in LV mode.

There is a limitation with the viewfinder; it only shows about 95% of the space (that exists in all Nikons in this range, as far as I'm aware, and I don't know if other brands are any different).

The movie option is good to have, but even though it's HD, the quality isn't that great so it's just something that's nice to have as an option.

The only thing I can try to complain about is the camera's sensitivity to temperature. But this is an issue with all cameras, so there's nothing that can really be done. The manual says not to use the camera in below-freezing temperatures, but I have done so and so far it still works (I got a protection plan so I'm not too worried about ruining it to get some dazzling snow shots!). If it's in the cold for long periods of time, however, it begins displaying error messages. It seems that it loses contact with the CPU of the lens and does not detect it. (Actually, my other qualm is that sometimes it seems to lose this contact for no particular reason, which is annoying, but all I have to do is shift the lens slightly tighter onto the mount. I don't know if this is a problem with all cameras, but it seems that mine in particular isn't perfectly crafted, that the lens doesn't lock on the mount tightly enough, or something). If it's really cold, sometimes it displays another error and freezes up, so I can't even turn it off. So my recommendation is to keep the camera out of the cold as much as possible, and what has kind of worked for me is keeping it zipped up under my jacket between shots. Of course, it's better to stay out of the cold altogether.

One other qualm, actually. I have noticed after transferring the photos that they are not the standard length/width ratio. They are slightly more panoramic/narrow, with black strips on the top and bottom filling out the rest of what should be the photo. I have no idea what this is all about, and I haven't noticed any settings for this, so although it might be my fault completely, I don't have evidence to believe that it is.

Overall I am very pleased with my baby, I named her Delila, and we are going to live happily ever after. Or rather, until I have progressed enough as a photographer to crave more sophisticated equipment.

So that's my very lay-man opinion. I recommend this camera to anyone who is looking for a hardcore upgrade from a point-and-shoot, and those who highly value having control and customization. For most intents and purposes, this camera will get the shot for you.

5 out of 5 stars Nikon Created a giant killer!   January 8, 2009
James W. Ricci Jr. (Eva, Alabama USA)
I have recently purchased the new D90 from Nikon and can honestly say this new camera is one of the best I have ever used. I was looking originally to upgrade my Nikon D200 to the new Nikon D300 and stumbled upon the new D90. I currently have a Nikon D200, D70s, D40x and a whole bunch of Nikon Glass and Flashes, all of which are completely interchangeable with this new camera! I must say that I feel that Nikon has created a giant killer (the competition, especially for Canon). When you pick the unit up you will experience a well thought out and engineered product (you should always go to a brick and mortar store to try out a camera first for proper fit in hands, feel, aesthetics, etc.). Some people have complained that the D90 is too small for their hands. I am a really big guy who has big hands and though the unit is small in my hands, it is still comfortable to use and does not feel like a plastic throw-a-way like the Canons. I have added the MB-D80 Hand Grip to the D90 for additional surface area and better controls (plus additional battery capacity) and the unit feels just as good as my larger D200 which also has the MB-D200 Hand Grip for similar reasons.

Regarding the D90's exceptional features, you will not go wrong here. The camera can serve both as a new bee unit for someone starting out or for a pro/enthusiast like myself with extremely fast shutter speeds, good 11 point focus area, and the real killer is the 720P HD Video capture capability...pure cream! I am sure glad I did not spend the extra money on the D300 as the reviews of the D90 are just as good as if not better than the D300...all for a camera costing a good $900.00 less!

All-in-all, a very good investment here for anyone wanting a very excellent, fast, and fun DSLR!

5 out of 5 stars awesome camera   January 7, 2009
P. Mchugh (vero beach,florida)
This camera does it all- pictures that are so crisp you will think you are seeing it live and then you can video it all too! My husband always loved his Nikon 35mm and wasn't adjusting to the digital world until now. kudos!!!!

4 out of 5 stars great camera, found 2 dead pixels   January 6, 2009
V. Gonzalez (Monterrey, Mexico)
It's a great camera, i don't complain, great built and it feels good in your hand. Image quality it's what i expected. the kit lenses are flexible and sharp, not complains at all... but i recently founded 2 dead pixels in every picture, and i read that it's a normal thing in this body, not very happy with that.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! Never, never buy a point and shoot again...   January 4, 2009
Daniel Rubenstein (Secret Lair)
Fanboy:
I know the price is more then a point and shoot - but you get what you pay for. Having owned a digital camera since 1999, and those all bring little point and shoot clicker - I have accumulated around 7000 digital pictures before I bought this camera in Nov 09. I now have around 10000! In 3 months I have almost taken half the amount that I took in 9 years!

Good:
The image quality is outstanding. The camera body is hefty enough to feel strong buy not to heavy to use for long periods of time. Built in flash works like a champ. Battery lasts FOREVER - I think we charge weekly and shoot pictures almost everyday!

Bad(If you could call it that):
Lens is a built to "multitasking" - Does a bunch of things good - Not 1 thing great.
Steep - steep learning curve if you want to learn and use every feature.
Camera sometime freezes causing a battery removal. This happens few and far between.

I couldn't recommend this more.
