 DON'T BUY - Totally unreliable! November 4, 2008

I was very excited to get this unit for RAID 5 backups. But it wasn't a week before I got a failed disk warning and my drive directory was corrupted. I rebuilt the RAID and everything seemed OK until a day or two later the directory failed again. Data salvaging software helped me restore a good part of the RAID volume but was a very long process. LaCie took it back and looked at it but claimed nothing was wrong. The issue I believe is with the interface controller, either the firewire or USB controllers which I use to connect to my system.
If you want to loose data every other time you mount a disk, then this is the one for you.

For those of you searching for a RAID solutions that's cheaper than Apple's X-Serve RAID and faster the the Sloooowbo, I mean Drobo, LaCie's Quadra RAID might just be the ticket. Let's face it, Drobo is a bit light in the loafers when it comes to speed and built more as a "consumer" than professional enterprise storage solution.
On the other hand Apple's X-Serve RAID is big, loud and expensive. Plus it uses more power than a small emerging nation.
Well, Goldilocks, LaCie's Quadra RAID is just RIGHT...
My good friend turned me on to these drives. He's has been using them for a couple years now and he is ALWAYS right. The 4TB drive (which equals 2.73 Tb of RAID 5 storage after allowing for overhead and redundancy) is a great Digital Asset Management Solution
